The Underwater Research Center of the Russian Geographical Society brings together people from different scientific fields – historians, archaeologists, divers, oceanographers and many others to conduct comprehensive underwater research using a complete range of tools and equipment. The purpose of the research is to study and preserve the natural, cultural and historic heritage.

Read MoreThe team of the Underwater Research Center, RGS continues to explore the battleship Empress Catherine the Great (in 1918 the name was changed to Free Russia) which was sunk in the Novorossiysk bay after World War I. The next stage of works is to start examining internal areas of the battleship and recovery of the artifacts to be exhibited in museums.
